About IOE/ Purwanchal Campus

Purwachal Campus formerly known as Eastern Region Campus (ERC) is one of constituent campus of Tribhuvan University (TU) and one of the associate engineering campuses of Institute of Engineering (IOE) which is a comprehensive, non-profit making, autonomous institution and pioneering institution of higher education level in Nepal funded by the government of Nepal. It is situated at Gangalal Marg, Tinkune, Dharan-8, Sunsari district in the eastern region of Nepal. It occupies areas of 34-13-11.75 Bigahas in convenient unit, which is equivalent to about 234,870.53 square meters. It is adjacent to Charkose Jhadi (densely forest) in the north and located at entrance gate by bus of Dharan Sub-metropolitan city.

It was established in Paush, 2034 BS (1976) under the loan agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB). In another agreement with government of United Kingdom (UK) held in Shrawn, 2035BS (1978), the technical assistance was provided by the government of United Kingdom (UK). ERC was formally organized under Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University (TU) and all the construction works were completed in 2043 BS (1984).

The campus firstly started trade level courses in Mechanical, Electrical and Civil engineering streams as specified in the loan and the project agreements. The  programs in Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering (3 years) was started since 2043 BS (1984) and also Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Engineering program in 2052 BS, Computer and electronics engineering program in 2059 BS. In the attempt to further up gradation, IOE/ Purwanchal Campus introduced Bachelor level course that was Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Agricultural Engineering in 2057 BS (2000) which was first and pioneer in the country. Another BE program in Civil Engineering was commenced from 2061 BS (2004).

The campus was also conducted under Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training (CTEVT) since 2045/11/12 (BS) by the mandate of Government of Nepal and later again came back and run under IOE/ TU since 2047/2/15 BS.

Within the framework of development objectives and strategy, IOE/ Purwanchal Campus has been proposed to develop as focused in centre of excellence in engineering education in eastern region of the country. After successful running the programs in BE in Agricultural and Civil Engineering, it was started another programs in Electronics & communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering in 2069 (BS) and Electrical Engineering in 2071 (BS) and new program BE in Architecture in 2072 (BS). Till now there are seven BE engineering programs running in the campus and all trade level courses, three years diploma engineering programs was phased out as per policy of IOE/TU which was started since beginning of the establishment of the campus.

At present there are more than 1200 students are studying in different programs. The physical facilities of IOE/ Purwanchal campus are developed and spread in around 35 bigahas of land that includes building space for classes, library, workshops, laboratories, administrative building, students’ hostel (boys & girls), housing for faculty and staff and other services like access of roads, electricity, internet & communication and drinking water etc. The workshops and laboratories are with equipped with state of art tools, equipments and machines for the students. There are 100 plus teaching faculty and 60 plus administrative and supportive staff at the campus. The faculty members are well qualified and trained in different allied areas of engineering and technology and they have several years of experience in their respective areas of specialization.

About Dharan

Dharan is a beautiful and multicultural town of eastern region of Nepal. It lies on Sunsari District, Koshi Zone and right at the foot of hills at an altitude of 1148 ft (349m) and almost 600 KM from capital city Kathmandu. It is also a major town of Nepal and the town of many different races and ethnic groups. Dharan is one of beautiful cities of Nepal, beautiful roads, remarkable homes and natural beauty. It embraces cleanliness, openness, friendly hill people and their smiles.

A famous hill station called Bhedetar (19 KM from Dharan) lies in the north and it has remained the place of relief for the people of Dharan during the summer as the heat begins to rise. In the autumn when the sky becomes clear, one can witness the breathtaking range of mountains. The distinct view of Makalu can be seen from this area. Many fine lodges and the restaurants are now opened up for the tourists and the people coming for the cool and fresh air.  The tower named Charle’s tower situated on the top of the hill is one of the exciting spot indeed from where one who can see excellent views of Hile-Dhankuta, Kanchenjunga Himal in the north and a really large valley with Sapta Koshi river along with Dharan Bazaar very close but really down. Dharan grew after British setup the ‘Gurkha Recruitment Center’ in 1953. Two ethnic groups namely Rais and Limbus used to constitute the major portion of the Gurkha soldiers and these groups came from the eastern region of Nepal for their training.

Dharan has a tropical monsoon climate with maximum temperature of 35 to 36 Degree Celsius in April and minimum of 10 to 12 Degree Celsius in January. The maximum rainfall is about 460mm which is usually seen in August. It is also known for having B. P. Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences, over 25 Temples and holy sites, making it an important pilgrimage destination. When the sky is clear (especially during autumn season), one can witness magnificent views of the Himalayan range and enjoy fresh Himalayan breeze.

Pindeshwar, Dantakali, Budha Subba, Panchkanya Temples are all located in historically and archeologically important Bijaypur hill. A famous Barahchatra temple at Chatara is very near to Dharan. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is the only refuge for wild buffalo and is home for more than 300 species of birds.

Dharan is also the gateway for the many north/east hill regions and starting point for the trekkers to the Kanchenjunga, Solu Khambu and the Arun Valley. Dharan enjoys many fine lodges and the elegant restaurants which serves the good meals but is short of star hotels. The shopping mall named Bhatabhateni and Gorkha Shopping Complex is also at Dharan.

Dharan is also remaining an educational center for the eastern Nepal; boosts some of the fine colleges, schools and the Medical college. B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Science is not only a major medical institute of Nepal but also serves high quality health care services to eastern Nepal and north parts of India. Besides IOE/ Purwanchal Campus, Central Campus of Technology (Food and Beverages Technology) Hatisar, Mahendra Multiple Campus are constituent campuses of TU and Pindeswor Bidyapitha ( Sanskrit ) are the major institution of Dharan.

By Bus: 12 hour from Kathmandu; 1 hour from Biratnagar ; 1/2 hour from Itahari; 3 hour from Bagdogara, Silliguri, India; 1.30 hour from Jogabani, India

By Air: 45 minutes from Kathmandu to Biratnagar.
