About Purwanchal Campus
Introduction
Purwanchal Campus, formerly known as Eastern Region Campus (ERC), is one of the constituent campuses of Tribhuvan University and a leading engineering institution under the Institute of Engineering. Established with the vision of advancing technical education and engineering excellence in Nepal, the campus has emerged as a prominent center for engineering education, research, innovation, and professional development in the eastern region of the country.
Located at Gangalal Marg, Dharan–8, Sunsari, the campus spreads across .35 bighas (about 234,870 square meters) of scenic land adjoining the Charkose Jhadi forest area. Its strategic location at the gateway of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City provides an ideal academic environment enriched by natural beauty, accessibility, and modern urban facilities.
Historical Background
Purwanchal Campus was established in Poush 2034 B.S. (1977 A.D.) under a development loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank. Subsequently, technical assistance was provided through an agreement between the Government of Nepal and the Government of the United Kingdom in Shrawan 2035 B.S. (1978 A.D.). The campus was formally integrated under the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, and the major infrastructure development works were completed by 2043 B.S. (1986 A.D.).
Initially, the campus focused on producing mid-level technical manpower by offering trade and diploma-level programs in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. Over time, additional diploma programs in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Electronics, and Computer Engineering were introduced in response to national technological needs.
Recognizing the growing demand for higher engineering education, the campus initiated bachelor-level engineering programs beginning with Bachelor of Engineering in Agricultural Engineering in 2057 B.S. (2000 A.D.), the first program of its kind in Nepal. This was followed by Civil Engineering in 2061 B.S. (2004 A.D.), and later by Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Architecture. From 2074B.S. (2017A.D.) started M.Sc. Programs.
Today, Purwanchal Campus stands as one of Nepal’s leading public engineering institutions, producing competent engineers, researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and technical leaders serving both national and international sectors.
